Founded in 1990 as The Learning Place by Phyllis Newland

Please Give to the Phyllis Newland

Memorial Adult Literacy Fund

Phyllis Newland was a literacy provider who believed in giving adults a hand up, not a hand out. Her years of experience with adults and older youth with literacy needs  provided a foundation for the non-profit organization she started in 1990. We have set up a fund in her memory. Please make a donation (payable to The Newand Center) to continue her legacy.

The Newland Center is a non-profit, volunteer-based chartered corporation dedicated to providing free adult literacy services to our Syracuse inner-city neighborhoods. Our center is conveniently located on East Genesee Street with access from all neighborhoods of the city via bus lines.

Our volunteer tutors provide one-on-one tutoring and group instruction to enrolled adult students. Students are assessed to evaluate their strengths and needs when they enroll. A full range of educational subjects is offered.

We are funded by foundation grants, local organizations and individual contributions. Volunteers are always welcome as tutors, office staff and board committee members.

Everyone learns from everybody else because we all have a lifetime

of knowledge and experience to share.  - Phyllis Newland, Founder
